Consent information
Purpose of the experiment: To learn more about how people find their way around new places.
What you will do in this experiment: You will learn to find your way through a 3-dimensional, virtual environment and complete a set of questionnaires.
Time required: The study will take most people between 30-50 minutes to complete.
Risks: The experiment uses a 3-dimensional video game. Games like this one can make some people feel nauseous. If you feel nauseous at any point in the experiment, please quit the game and go on to the post-experiment survey.
Benefits: Although we do not anticipate any direct benefit to you, we hope that this work will help us better understand how people normally find their way through new environments. If you are interested, you can contact Neil Schmitzer-Torbert at torbertn@wabash.edu and we will send you a copy of any manuscripts that result from this experiment. If you are participating for extra credit or course credit at Wabash College, you will receive 1 unit of credit for each 15 minutes of participation in the experiment.
Confidentiality: All data you provide will be strictly confidential. We do record your name, email address and IP address, but only for the purposes of determining who has participated in our study, and contacting people who have won prizes. Your personal information will never be used with the data from the experiment.
Participation and withdrawal: Your participation in this experiment is completely voluntary, and you may exit the experiment at any time. If you exit the experiment, any data collected up to that point will be retained.
Contact: If you have questions about this experiment, please contact Neil Schmitzer-Torbert, Department of Psychology, Wabash College, Crawfordsville, IN 47933 (email: torbertn@wabash.edu).
